Changing and adding file extensions recognized by Dreamweaver

Introduction
This TechNote applies to the following related symptoms in Adobe Dreamweaver:
  • When opening a file, you see this error message: "Can't find a valid editor for this file extension."
  • The color-coding in Code view isn't matching the color-coding for the file type you want.
  • The server-model functionality isn't available for your file type.
  • You cannot open a page in Design view. It only opens in Code view.
  • When you go to File > Save, or File > Open, you don't see the file type you want.
Dreamweaver ships with the ability to edit and display many different file types. This TechNote focuses on customizing Dreamweaver to recognize new file types by editing the Extensions.txt and MMDocumentTypes.xml files, and setting the Open In Code View settings to see the new file types in Design view.
  • The Extensions.txt file
The Extensions.txt file is a text file listing all file types recognized by Dreamweaver. This file can be edited in any external text editor like Notepad or Text Editor to add to the list of recognized file types. Do not modify the Dreamweaver configuration files in Dreamweaver itself.
  • The MMDocumentTypes.xml file
The MMDocumentTypes.xml file contains definitions of document types as well as a list of file extensions associated with each recognized document type. Adding file extensions to the Extensions.txt file allows Dreamweaver merely to recognize a file extension and allow files of this type to be opened in Dreamweaver. Adding file extensions to the MMDocumentTypes.xml file tells Dreamweaver how to treat this new file extension and to which document type this file extension belongs.
Note: For the purpose of this TechNote, only basic aspects of editing the MMDocumentTypes.xml file will be discussed. For a detailed overview of editing this file, see Extending Dreamweaver (from within Dreamweaver, choose Help > Extending Dreamweaver, and search on MMDocumentTypes.xml).
  • Open in Code View
The Open in Code View preference identifies file extensions that do not allow Design view. After following the instructions in this TechNote, be sure to remove the file extension (if it is listed) from the Open In Code View preference to allow file editing in Design view. To set this preference, choose Edit > Preferences (Windows) or Dreamweaver > Preferences (Mac OS), and locate the File Types / Editors category.
Editing the Extensions.txt file
When opening a file that Dreamweaver doesn't recognize, you see this error message: "Can't find a valid editor for this file extension." New extensions can be added to the list of extensions that Dreamweaver recognizes. To add new extensions, edit the Extensions.txt file. Entries in the Extensions.txt file also control the order in which files are listed in the File > Open and File > Save dialog boxes. For the purpose of demonstration, we will add the .inc file type to Dreamweaver.
Note: This procedure requires you to locate hidden files, hidden folders and extensions for known file types. By default, Windows Explorer doesn't show hidden files, hidden folders, and file name extensions that it recognizes.
To show hidden files, hidden folders, and extensions for known file types:
  1. In Windows Explorer, do one of the following:
    • In Windows XP, choose Tools > Folder Options.
    • In Windows Vista, choose Organize > Folder and Search Options.
  2. Click the View tab in the Folder Options dialog box.
  3. In Advanced Settings, select Show Hidden Files And Folders.
  4. Deselect Hide Extensions For Known File Types.
  5. Click OK.
To add file types to the Extensions.txt file:
  1. Locate the Extensions.txt file within the Dreamweaver user configuration folder. The location of this folder depends on the operating system and the version of Dreamweaver:
    • Dreamweaver CS3 on Windows Vista:
      C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Dreamweaver 9\Configuration
    • Dreamweaver 8 on Windows Vista:
      C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Macromedia\Dreamweaver 8\Configuration
    • Dreamweaver CS3 on Windows XP:
      C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Adobe\Dreamweaver 9\Configuration
    • Dreamweaver 8 on Windows XP & 2000:
      C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Macromedia\Dreamweaver 8\Configuration
    • Dreamweaver CS3 on Mac OS X:
      Mac HD:Users:[username]:Library:Application Support:Adobe:Dreamweaver 9:Configuration
    • Dreamweaver 8 on Mac OS X:
      Mac HD:Users:[username]:Library:Application Support:Macromedia:Dreamweaver 8:Configuration
Note: Edits to this file will only be available to the current user. Changes made to files within the user profile will not be available to other users. For more information about manually editing Dreamweaver configuration files in a multi-user environment, please see Customizing Dreamweaver.
  2. Open Extensions.txt in any external text editor like Notepad or Text Editor. Do not modify the Dreamweaver configuration files in Dreamweaver itself.
  3. Add the extension to the All Documents line. Extensions must be in uppercase letters and separated by commas. (INC should already be listed by default. If not, add it.)
    Example: HTML,HTM,SHTM,SHTML,INC
  4. To add extensions to an existing document group, add the extension to the extension list for the desired group. To add a new document group, add a new line that contains the new document type as well as a listing of associated extensions.
    Example: INC:Include Files
(This can also be added to the Server Side Include list already within the file.)
  5. Save the file and restart Dreamweaver.
  6. To see the changes, open Dreamweaver and open a file with the newly added file extension. It should now open in Code view only in Dreamweaver. Select File > Save As, and click the Save As Type pop-up menu. You should now see an option for Include Files with *.inc as the recognized file extension. It's the same for the Files Of Type pop-up menu in File > Open.
Note: The order in which extensions are listed is the order in which they will appear in the File > Open and File > Save dialog boxes.
To get Design view, color coding, and server behavior functionality (if applicable) working, you need to edit the MMDocumentTypes.xml file, as described below.
The MMDocumentTypes.xml file
Where the Extensions.txt file contains the list of extensions recognized by Dreamweaver, the MMDocumentTypes.xml file contains information about the server model, color coding style, descriptions, and so forth for each known document type.
In addition to adding extensions to the Extension.txt file, new extensions must also be added to the file extension lists for the associated document type. If not, Dreamweaver will not know how to display this file type and will open it in Code view by default. If this extension is not associated with any defined document type, a new document type should be created. To create a new document type, see Extending Dreamweaver (from within Dreamweaver, choose Help > Extending Dreamweaver, and search on MMDocumentTypes.xml).
Note: For the purpose of this TechNote, 'document type definition' refers to files that contain information about documents recognized by Dreamweaver and are not to be confused by 'DTDs' mentioned in XML documentation.
Steps to add extensions to a document type definition in the MMDocumentTypes.xml file:
  1. Locate the MMDocumentTypes.xml file in the main Dreamweaver configuration folder (not the Dreamweaver user configuration folder). The location of this folder depends on the operating system and the version of Dreamweaver:
    • Dreamweaver CS3 on Windows Vista & XP:
      C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Dreamweaver CS3\Configuration\DocumentTypes
    • Dreamweaver 8 on Windows Vista, XP & 2000:
      C:\Program Files\Macromedia\Dreamweaver 8\Configuration\DocumentTypes
    • Dreamweaver CS3 on Mac OS X:
      Mac HD:Applications:Adobe Dreamweaver CS3:Configuration:Document Types
    • Dreamweaver 8 on Mac OS X:
      Mac HD:Applications:Macromedia Dreamweaver 8:Configuration:Document Types
  2. Open MMDocumentTypes.xml in any external text editor like Notepad or Text Editor. Do not modify the Dreamweaver configuration files in Dreamweaver itself.
  3. Find the tag set for the desired document type. Below is the default document type definition for HTML documents from the MMDocumentTypes.xml file:

  4. Add the desired extension to the winfileextension and macfileextension attributes of thedocumenttype tag. For example:
    winfileextension="html,htm,shtml,shtm,stm,tpl,lasso,xhtml,inc"
The code above adds the INC file extension to the list of files that Dreamweaver treats as HTML files. Adding extensions to the Mac OS and Windows lists for this file types allows Dreamweaver to open this file type in Design view as other files with defined HTML file extensions.
  5. Save MMDocumentTypes.xml and restart Dreamweaver.
  6. To see the changes, open Dreamweaver and open a file that has the newly added file extension. You should see that Design view, code coloring and server behavior functionality (if applicable) are working now.
Note: The order in which extensions are listed is important. The first extension in the extensions lists will be the default extension used for this file type.
Note: If you made a backup of the MMDocumentTypes.xml and left it in the Configuration/DocumentTypes folder, you will see multiple warning messages pop up when you launch Dreamweaver that look like this:
'The Document Type "HTML" will not be added because it uses a file extension that is already associated with a prior Document Type.'
To stop these warning messages, move your backup copy of the MMDocumentTypes.xml file outside the Configuration/DocumentTypes folder. For example, move it to the desktop. You will also get this error message if you have the same file type listed more than once in the MMDocumentTypes.xml.
Edit in Code View preference
The final step is to check the File Types / Editors preference settings (Edit > Preferences) and make sure that this file extension is not listed in the Open In Code View field. By default, the INC file extension appears on this list. Remove ".inc" from the Open in Code View list and files with this extension should now be viewable in Design view.

To Fall In 'Second Love'

We have all heard stories about first love and the first time experience of falling head over heels for someone etc but what about second love. The second time you find friend whom I have seen suffering her first break up and then falling in love again, was very upset yesterday night, as she could feel that her second relationship was also at stake for certain situations. She then asked me 'why don't we learn? Why do we find second love?' This is what I told her -

1.Law Of Attraction – The universal truth is that there is always a factor of attraction between a boy and a girl. That's why it is often said that a girl and boy can never remain friends, they tend to fall in love. Thus, during a break up, when you get support from the opposite sex who happens to be your friend, finally concludes to be the second love.

2.Expectations Met – The basis of every break up is unfulfilled expectations. When we don't get something from someone we expected it most from, we move away and at that time when another person fulfills all the expectations without even having to ask him/her, one cannot help but fall in love.

3.Emotional Support – A break up has an inverse effect on our emotions and more than the feeling of loosing someone, it's the fear of being alone once again, hurts the most. The position of a lover is of great importance in everyone's life and to find that place suddenly empty, is painful. Thus, to fill up the gap, to maintain the emotional support, we tend to find love again.

4.Was A Friend, Now A Lover – Most of the time if you notice, the second person in your life is mostly the friend. Believe it or not, he/she becomes our love as it's the safest option. We know him, we can trust him, the risk of getting hurt again is less and thus, he is the best choice.

5.Expectation Of A Better Future – No matter how much fun we make of Karan Johar romantic dreamland movies, deep in our heart that is exactly what we wish. A perfect lover and specially after a break up, the needs becomes a necessity. With the perfect person standing right next to us, expectation of a better future gets us involve into second love.

To fall in love for the second time for these five reasons most likely may or may not end up being successful. So, the next time you are on the verge of falling in love for the second time, check yourself for these five factors.

How to stop pesky calls and SMSes

How to stop pesky calls and SMSes

Don't want to be annoyed by unwanted commercial calls and SMSes? Here's all that you should know about Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's (TRAI) new regulations to give your mobile phone a little rest.

The new guidelines set by TRAI is supposed to be effective on February 1, 2011. The initial deadline of January 1 was extended by a month.

A new set of guidelines became necessary due to the limited success of TRAI's earlier initiatives. The National Do Not Call Registry was somewhat effective in reducing the number of unsolicited calls but indirectly led to an increase in the number of unsolicited SMSes landing in consumers' inboxes.

Feb 1: How to stop pesky calls and SMSes

Under the new guidelines consumers can choose their preference to receive or not to receive commercial communication from seven pre-defined categories. Users also have the option to either block all commercial calls and SMSes or to block only commercial calls while receiving SMSes of their choice.

Consumers have two choices, they can register in one of the two categories:

1. Fully blocked category: Consumers will not receive any commercial communication on their phones either as voice calls or SMSes.

2. Partially blocked category: Consumer will not receive any voice calls, but can choose to receive SMSes on any or some or all from seven pre-defined subjects:

a. Banking/insurance/financial products/credit cards

b. Real estate

c. Education

d. Health

e. Consumer goods and automobiles

f. Communication/broadcasting/entertainment/IT

g. Tourism and leisure

For users already registered with the National Do Not Call Registry (NDNC) do not have to re-register, their registration will automatically continue under the 'fully blocked' category.

The request for registration on the National Customer Preference Register (NCPR) will effective in seven days from the date of request for registration.

There are no charges involved in the registration, re-registration or change in registration process.

HOW TO REGISTER

There are four ways to activate your choice:

1. Via SMS sent to 1909

2. Dial 1909 and register through IVRS (Interactive Voice Response System)

3. Dial 1909 and register with the help of a customer care executive

4. Through the websites of mobile service providers

Registration via SMS

To opt for the fully blocked category, send SMS "START 0" to 1909.

To opt for the partially blocked category, send SMS "Start [option]" to 1909. The options are explained:

- "START 1" for receiving SMS relating to banking/insurance/financial products/credit cards

- "START 2" for receiving SMS relating to real estate

- "START 3" for receiving SMS relating to education

- "START 4" for receiving SMS relating to health

- "START 5" for receiving SMS relating to consumer goods and automobiles

- "START 6" for receiving SMS relating to communication/broadcasting/entertainment/IT

- "START 7" for receiving SMS relating to tourism and leisure

To opt for multiple preferences from the categories send SMS "Start [option1, option2, option3,...]" to 1909. For example, for receiving commercial SMSes from banking/insurance/financial products/credit cards and real estate, send the SMS as "START 1, 2".

In case a preference "0" is mentioned in the SMS, it will override other preferences and will be treated as 'fully blocked.' For example, "START 0,1,7", will be considered as a fully blocked option.

On sending the SMS, users will receive a confirmation SMS and need to reply to the message to ensure the options chosen are implemented.

On receiving the confirmation SMS from the subscriber, the service provider will send another SMS indicating the user's preferences along with a unique registration number. It is advisable to save the unique registration number as this will serve as a reference for the subscriber's registration of preference.

Registration via IVRS

Consumers can call the toll-free number 1909 and then follow the instructions to indicate their choice of blocked voice calls and SMSes. On successful competition of the IVRS process the consumer will receive a confirmation SMS that also mentions the consumer's unique registration number.

Registration through customer care executive

Consumers can call the toll-free number 1909 and speak to a customer care executive to indicate their preferences. The consumer will receive a confirmation SMS along with their unique registration number.

Registration via service provider websites

Users can also log in to their respective access providers' websites to register their preferences.

Apple overtakes Microsoft as biggest tech co

Apple Inc shot past Microsoft Corp as the world's biggest tech company based on market value, the latest milestone in the resurgence of the maker of the iPhone, which nearly went out of business in the 1990s.

Apple's shares rose as much 2.8 per cent on Nasdaq on Wednesday, as Microsoft shares floundered, briefly pushing its market value above $229 billion, ahead of its longtime rival.

Both stocks ended down after a late-day sell-off, but Apple emerged ahead with a market value of about $222 billion, compared with Microsoft's $219 billion, according to Reuters data.

Apple shares closed down 0.4 per cent at $244.11 on Nasdaq, while Microsoft fell 4 per cent to a seven-month low of $25.01.

Shares of Apple are worth more than 10 times what they were 10 years ago, as it has profited from revolutionising consumer electronics with its stylish, easy to use products such as the iPod, iPhone and MacBook laptops.

The last time Apple had a higher market value than Microsoft was December 19, 1989, according to Thomson Reuters Datastream.

Microsoft, whose operating system runs on more than 90 per cent of the world's personal computers, has not been able to match growth rates from its hey-day 1990s. Its stock is down 20 per cent from 10 years ago.

Apple, which struggled for many years to get its products into the mainstream, resorted to a $150 million investment from the much larger Microsoft in 1997 in order to keep it afloat. At that time, Microsoft's market value was more than five times that of Apple.

Microsoft still leads Apple in sales. In the latest quarter, Microsoft reported $14.5 billion in revenue compared with Apple's $13.5 billion.

Cupertino, California-based Apple is now the second-largest company on the Standard & Poor's 500 index by market value, behind energy behemoth Exxon Mobil Corp.

3D sequel of Mr India

When Mr India was released back in the mid eighties, the advent of SFX into Bollywood was still a long way off.

But in terms of visual appeal, right from Sridevi's romantic love song with an invisible man, avenging Hanuman statues and a myriad other thrills, basically camera tricks, it managed to tickle a generation of movie watchers.

And now producer Boney Kapoor, who is readying a sequel (Mr India 2), is going the whole hog - not only has he decided to incorporate the best SFX available today, but he will also shoot the film in 3D.

"I want to take this film to the highest level. 3D would be a terrific experience with this kind of subject. We were toying with the idea for a long time, but finalised things only a few days ago," reveals Boney.

The sequel will star Anil Kapoor and Sridevi in the lead role (they were last seen together in the 1997 Judaai) while Salman Khan will play the larger than life villain.

Since a lot rides on technology, the budget of the film has shot up to nearly Rs 100 crore. "Yes. That's true. I am also bringing down foreign technicians to do Salman's look. He will be seen in a negative role that will be remembered for a long time.

It's also something he has never been attempted on this scale before. Even for us, it will be a big challenge to project Salman as a negative character," adds Boney.

The film will also star a young couple. "I have not zeroed in on who it will be, but they could be known faces. I still have to finalise the director. Currently, two writers are busy completing two separate scripts. I will be choosing one of them," says Boney.

Hyderabad bikers blaze new green trail

It may sound like an adventure sport on Hyderabad's roads but a bunch of nature enthusiasts in the city have started cycling to work. These bikers have not only parked their four-wheelers in the garage but are inspiring others to opt for the humble cycle.

On World Earth Day, Hyderabad wakes up to many denizens who have dropped the car for a cycle. Take for instance, Kukatpally resident Sridhar Birlangi (32) who cycles 18 kilometres everyday to Hitech City, on his Cannondale F9. While he has done his environmental calculation (I save the earth 5.2 kg of toxic emissions), he has added up what he saves every month, Rs 5,000, by not using his car. Employed with Convergys, Sridhar has even started a website giving tips on which bicycle to use and how to maintain them.

While the trend is popular in many western countries, it is aided with the presence of a separate cycle track. With no footpaths in the city, a cycle track is a far-fetched luxury. But that hasn't deterred the biking community.

While fast moving vehicles and improper traffic management are a sore point, they stick to the cycle. "The traffic is a deterrent but I feel proud that I am using an environment friendly option to commute," says 30-year-old Manoj Jain, manager, software engineering, Computer Associate, who cycles on his Hercules ACT 110 from Miyapur to Gachibowli. The two-way ride adds up to 30 km, he says.

With many IT firms having a shower facility at the workplace has helped bikers nurture this passion. They carry clothes with them to work, and log on to their system after a shower, having cycled through heavy traffic and dusty roads.

The 'swearing-by-the-bicycle' brigade also comprises 40-year-old Srikant Shetty, a systems analyst with a software firm and a resident of BHEL. He cycles 30 km every day and says that while initially his family frowned on his decision but with his back pain disappearing, they are happy now. His four-wheeler is now used only for family outings.

Though there is a Hyderabad Cycling Club which holds weekly rides, people opting for bi-cycles as alternative transportation to automobiles will make a huge difference to the city's growing pollution levels, environmentalists say.

These enthusiasts are growing in numbers, with some joining them out of sheer curiosity. Tony Kurian, 25, is one of them. Apprehensive initially, Kurian did a search to confirm that people were indeed cycling to work. "To my surprise, I found people do cycle to work. For past two months I have been cycling and have lost six kgs, which is a big gain for me," says the resident of Banjara Hills Road No 3, who bikes it up to Prashasan Nagar,
Jubilee Hills, everyday. Soon, Tony left the gym as he felt the bicycle ride

made him feel trimmer and stronger. And if he took 45 minutes to reach office earlier, the commute time has dropped to 26 minutes.

Bikers say cycling for 20 minutes is as good as walking for an hour. It is a complete exercise for heart and is as good as swimming.

India may not get power-packed Nexus One!

The much-hyped Google's smartphone Nexus One may soon see its India launch. However, according to a Web reports, it will not be the power-packed Nexus One, but a slimmed down version of the Google Android-powered phone.

/photo.cms?msid=5657309According to online reports, Google is working on an edition of Google Nexus One for the developing markets like India and Russia that is likely to lack some of the features of the version being sold in the international markets.

The Indian model's pricing is also likely to be less vis-a-vis Nexus One's international pricing.

In January, Google launched its new smartphone Nexus One that it sells directly to consumers. Dubbed as "superphone" by Google, the phone aims to challenge the likes of Apple, Blackberry and Nokia.

On looks front, Nexus One measures 119mm (H) X 59.8mm (W) X 11.5mm (D), and weighs 130 grams. Featuring a 3.7-inch (9.4 centimeter) AMOLED touchscreen display, the phone has been designed in partnership with Taiwan's HTC Corp. HTC also made the first Android-powered phone.

The `pencil-thin' Nexus One offers a 5 megapixel camera (with auto focus, a 2x digital zoom and LED flash) and video recording at 20fps (720 x 480).

On memory front, Nexus One packs 512MB Flash, 512MB RAM and 4GB Micro SD Card which can be expanded to 32 GB.

Delhi Metro powered by Google

DMRC and Google India announced their partnership through Google Transit, to provide complete information on Delhi Metro schedules and r
outes.

Transit service for Delhi Metro would also be available on mobile devices with Google Maps for Mobile, so commuters can check the latest updates to make route changes on-the-go. Google Transit which is a way to navigate on Google maps can give easy information on train timings, station locations, frequency of service, time taken for travel and ticket fares.

"In line with Delhi Metro's vision for a people-centred public transport system, we have launched several initiatives to help commuters better manage their travel time, transfers, and make more informed transport decisions. The collaboration with Google is another step in this direction to make it even easier for the public to plan their trips with transit information on Google Maps", said E Sreedharan, Managing Director, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation.

How Google Transit will work
  • The user searches for information to reach from Place A to B on Google Maps
  • The result shows a map with the possible route and driving directions for the commuter
  • By choosing the transit option, commuters would get first hand information on Delhi metro's schedule and passing lines in that area
  • Commuters get to see the step-by-step directions for the entire route including schedules, travel time and fares for each leg of the trip in text and on the map
  • Commuters can also switch on the Layers option on desktop and mobile to get a quick snapshot of the entire Metro network. They can click the station icons to get train information for that station.

Google also provides information on Chennai MRTS, Kolkata Metro, Hyderabad Metro transit services to commuters in Chennai, Kolkata and Hyderabad respectively.

Microsoft launches Web-based OS in India

The world's largest software maker Microsoft made its cloud-based operating system commercially available for Indian users.

The computer power on Windows Azure, a cloud-based operating system hosted in Microsoft's data centers, will be available at $0.12 on an hourly basis, while storage on Azure will cost enterprises $0.15 per GB on a monthly basis.

The web edition of its database service SQL Azure will be available at about $10 per month for up to 1 GB. The business edition of its database service will be priced at about $100 per month for up to 10 GB of database per month.

Rajan Anandan, managing director, Microsoft India, said, "All of our popular products are already cloud-ready, and we have a clear future roadmap to provide anytime, anywhere access across diverse devices spanning computer, mobile and Internet."

The company claims to have over 3,000 applications developed from India that are currently hosted on the cloud platform. It already claims to have about 250 small and medium-sized customers in India. There are about 22,000 developers from India who are making applications on the Azure platform.

Companies like Infosys, HCL Technologies, Persistent Software, Wings Info, Cerebrate and CDC Software are developing commercial applications and solutions on Windows Azure platform.

Microsoft's estimates reveal that with the Windows Azure Platform, customers and partners can realise a reduction in Total Cost of Operations of key workloads by up to 30 to 40% over a three year period. The announcement makes Microsoft one of the few companies in India that is ready to offer cloud-based services across all three service layers in the cloud, including infrastructure, platform and software applications.

For software-as-a-service, Microsoft had launched Microsoft Online Services, Office Web Apps, Microsoft Hosted Dynamics, Office Communication online and SharePoint online in November last year.

For infrastructure-as-a-service, Microsoft had launched its offerings via Reliance ADAG, Netmagic last year. The platform as a service stack was rolled out as part of Windows Azure and SQL Azure launch.

It's official: An asteroid wiped out the dinosaurs

London: A giant asteroid smashing into Earth is the only plausible explanation for the extinction of the dinosaurs, a global scientific team said on Thursday, hoping to settle a row that has divided experts for decades.

A panel of 41 scientists from across the world reviewed 20 years' worth of research to try to confirm the cause of the so-called Cretaceous-Tertiary (KT) extinction, which created a "hellish environment" around 65 million years ago and wiped out more than half of all species on the planet.

Scientific opinion was split over whether the extinction was caused by an asteroid or by volcanic activity in the Deccan Traps in what is now India, where there were a series of super volcanic eruptions that lasted around 1.5 million years.

The new study, conducted by scientists from Europe, the United States, Mexico, Canada and Japan and published in the journal Science, found that a 15-kilometre (9 miles) wide asteroid slamming into Earth at Chicxulub in what is now Mexico was the culprit.

"We now have great confidence that an asteroid was the cause of the KT extinction. This triggered large-scale fires, earthquakes measuring more than 10 on the Richter scale, and continental landslides, which created tsunamis," said Joanna Morgan of Imperial College London, a co-author of the review.

The asteroid is thought to have hit Earth with a force a billion times more powerful than the atomic bomb at Hiroshima.

Morgan said the "final nail in the coffin for the dinosaurs" came when blasted material flew into the atmosphere, shrouding the planet in darkness, causing a global winter and "killing off many species that couldn't adapt to this hellish environment."

Scientists working on the study analysed the work of palaeontologists, geochemists, climate modellers, geophysicists and sedimentologists who have been collecting evidence about the KT extinction over the last 20 years.

Geological records show the event that triggered the dinosaurs' demise rapidly destroyed marine and land ecosystems, they said, and the asteroid hit "is the only plausible explanation for this".

Peter Schulte of the University of Erlangen in Germany, a lead author on the study, said fossil records clearly show a mass extinction about 65.5 million years ago -- a time now known as the K-Pg boundary.

Despite evidence of active volcanism in India, marine and land ecosystems only showed minor changes in the 500,000 years before the K-Pg boundary, suggesting the extinction did not come earlier and was not prompted by eruptions.

The Deccan volcano theory is also thrown into doubt by models of atmospheric chemistry, the team said, which show the asteroid impact would have released much larger amounts of sulphur, dust and soot in a much shorter time than the volcanic eruptions could have, causing extreme darkening and cooling.

Gareth Collins, another co-author from Imperial College, said the asteroid impact created a "hellish day" that signalled the end of the 160-million-year reign of the dinosaurs, but also turned out to be a great day for mammals.

"The KT extinction was a pivotal moment in Earth's history, which ultimately paved the way for humans to become the dominant species on Earth," he wrote in a commentary on the study.

Don't press F1 in Windows XP: Microsoft

The software giant Microsoft has told Windows XP users not to press the F1 key when prompted by a Web site, as part of a security advisory.

The advisory has been issued regarding an unpatched vulnerability that hackers could exploit to hijack PCs running Internet Explorer (IE). In the advisory, Microsoft confirmed the unpatched bug in VBScript that Polish researcher Maurycy Prodeus had revealed last week.

"The vulnerability exists in the way that VBScript interacts with Windows Help files when using Internet Explorer. If a malicious Web site displayed a specially crafted dialog box and a user pressed the F1 key, arbitrary code could be executed in the security context of the currently logged-on user. On systems running Windows Server 2003, Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration is enabled by default, which helps to mitigate against this issue," reads the advisory.

Recently, Prodeus called the bug a "logic flaw," and said attackers could exploit it by feeding users malicious code disguised as a Windows help file and convincing them to press the F1 key when a pop-up appeared. Such files have a ".hlp" extension.

Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 are impacted by the bug, said Microsoft, and any supported versions of Internet Explorer (IE) on those operating systems, including IE6 on Windows XP, could be exploited by hackers.

The security advisory said, "Our analysis shows that if users do not press the F1 key on their keyboard, the vulnerability cannot be exploited."

Users can also thwart the attacks by disabling Windows Help.

Google acquires photo-editing site Picnik

Google Inc acquired online photo-editing site Picnik, as the Web search leader continues with a deal binge includes three acquisitions in about three weeks.

Google did not disclose the financial terms of the deal for Picnik, a 5-year-old Seattle-based start-up which said on its website that it has 20 employees.

Google spokesman Andrew Pederson said in an email message that the Picnik team has joined Google's Seattle office and will work with Google's Picasa group.

Picasa is Google's Web photo sharing service. The deal is the latest example of Google's increasing appetite for acquisitions, as the company's core Internet search business has benefited from a recovery in the advertising sector.

In October, Google CEO Eric Schmidt said the company would resume its historic pace of acquiring one small company per month on average, with larger deals happening every year or two.

Last month Google acquired Aardvark, a social search engine and mobile Web email service reMail. Since September, Google has acquired 8 companies, said Pederson.

Google Chief Financial Officer Patrick Pichette, speaking at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom Conference conference on Monday, said that Google was beefing up its ranks as business conditions improve.

"The bottleneck for us right now is engineering. How many engineers can we find given that we have all these great opportunities?" Pichette said.

Picnik allows users to edit online photos from directly within a Web browser, eliminating the need for special, stand-alone editing software.

Hyd: Octopus reduced to role of guard

The state government is in no mood to restore to Octopus its original role of fighting urban terrorism and wants to use it as one of the security agencies of the police department.

The government has not taken any action so far on the suggestion of principal home secretary Gautam Kumar that the use of Octopus commandos for guarding strategic installations and important places of worship would render them useless to fight terrorists. "There are agencies that are trained to guard places on the hit list of terrorists. Octopus which has a specific task cut out for itself should not be wasted," Gautam Kumar said at a meeting chaired by the chief minister. Soon after the meeting it seemed that Kumar's sane advice would be given heed to, but a few days later this idea has been given up.

The first batch of Octopus commandos comprising about 300 men are posted at Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD). Its second batch of commandos -completing training -are expected to be posted at Shar, Sriharikota. Based on the central intelligence inputs over the years the police have narrowed down on about six spots that the terrorists might target.

The Octopus was created in the aftermath of the twin bomb blasts in September 2007. As per original plan it was supposed to be a composite force comprising various wings to take care of the entire gamut of terror-related activities such as intelligence collection, data analysis and operation. But the agency even before it could take off fell victim to ego problems of top cops.

After finding it unable to raise the kind of force originally envisaged, the government decided last year to reduce the Octopus to an operational unit and handed over its earlier mandate of intelligence collection part to the existing counter-intelligence cell. The operations unit, without its own eyes and ears, will now be used in situations like hostage crisis, building seizures and bomb attacks. In the beginning the Octopus was supposed to be provided with choppers for quick deployment and stationed at at least three designated spots in the state with headquarters in Hyderabad. But now Octopus commando units would be sent to at least five more strategic and sensitive spots.

Police officers who term the deployment of Octopus commandos at TTD and other places as misuse of the force point out that while Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has job of guarding central government installations such as airports and Nuclear Fuel Complex, it is the task of the AP Special Protection Force to keep a watch on important government structures such as Secretariat, dams and power plants.

They argued that given the recent explosions in Pune it is fair to believe that the threat of terrorist attacks in the state is still alive. They believe that since the Octopus has been raised on the lines of National Security Guards, the force which was used during Mumbai attacks, its role can be diluted only at the peril of public security. The force should be attached to the counter intelligence cell and work under the direct supervision of the director general of police. The state government has been using this model in case of special intelligence branch and the Greyhounds, both of which are dedicated to fighting left wing extremism, for the last 25 years. If this model can work against the naxalites why it cannot be used for fighting terrorism, they wondered.

Q&A With Bloom Energy’s Founder, Next Gen Fuel Cells and More

K.R. Sridhar sheds some light on how the magic box works.

San Jose--Bloom Energy made its long-anticipated debut today and while the company didn't share all of the details behind its so-called energy servers, it did give some.

An energy server can provide 100 kilowatts of power by converting natural gas or other hydrocarbons into electricity pretty much on demand. A single server is about the size of an industrial shipping crate, consists of four 25 kilowatt modules, and costs $700,000 to $800,000. In all, that means power for 9 to 10 cents after incentives in California.

http://www.youtube.com/v/uVZAT3U_Jls&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xcfcfcf&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&fs=1

But how does it work inside and what makes Bloom's better than the fuel cells designed by others? CEO and founder K.R. Sridhar gave us an explanation in the video. The picture shows two of the internal ceramic plates.

Sridhar (in the video and earlier in the day) also explains how Bloom may enhance the fuel cell in the future for a push into the domestic market in about a decade and the enhancement represents both a step forward and a step back. Carbon dioxide and water are byproducts of the gas-to-electricity reaction. By adding some additional "plumbing" components, the fuel cell can capture the water, run it through the fuel cell later and produce hydrogen. Hydrogen could then be stored until needed to power a car or provide electricity to a home.

The water-to-hydrogen reaction will require additional electricity. Bloom suggests that solar panels can provide this power. Although the fuel cell could do this reaction now, Bloom isn't putting in the components because the market isn't ready, said Sridhar. So having a path to energy storage: a step forward.

So what is the step back? In Bloom's patents, it talks about taking both the carbon dioxide and hydrogen, running them through the fuel cell and producing a methane-like fuel. In other words, Bloom-at least for now-doesn't appear to be looking at recycling carbon dioxide for the big architectural jump into the consumer market ten years from now.

"It is simpler" to just concentrate on hydrogen, Sridhar said.

Recycling carbon dioxide is a dream of many; it also remains a thorny scientific challenge. ARPA-E gave $23.7 miillion in grants to companies who hope to make fuel from sunlight and carbon dioxide. Maybe discretion is the better part of valor here. Besides, if someone else, such as BioCee or Sun Catalytix, can crack the carbon dioxide-to-fuel formula, Bloom may be able to license it. (Another highlight: Sridhar confirmed that zirconia, also called zirconium dioxide, is a key ingredient, confirming our earlier review of the patents.)

There's an interesting connection between Bloom and Hara, the carbon management software company. Kleiner Perkins invested in both companies and both listed Coca-Cola as a signature client. In fact, Fortune 500 friends played an integral part of the launches of both companies. It gives the companies credibility. However, if Kleiner relies on the same names too much, it may begin to take the sheen off the impact. So look for the big names at the next Kleiner launch and cross-check them with the rest of the portfolio.

And finally, here's a video of the servers themselves:

Volkswagen Polo

Volkswagen does not want the Polo to be another new small car for the Indian market. It wants to set a new benchmark.

28AD71F865990DAE76B3A582C80C7.jpg

It will be an understatement of the new decade if one says that VW has done their homework for India. You don't even need to drive the car to understand that. A glance at the tech specs reveal it all - small capacity petrol and diesel engines that are tuned for economy, feature rich Trendline (basic) trim level, VFM Comfortline and adequate safety kit for the top-end comfort line. And then the prices - who would have thought you, could get a car wearing a VW badge for under Rs 5 lakh? The 1.2 L litre petrol starts at Rs 4.34 lakh while the diesel 1.2 L at Rs 5.32 lakh. To put it perspective, the entry level VW Polo is more affordable than the similar spec Hyundai i20 and is only marginally more expensive than the entry level Suzuki Swift. A mainstream car from Europe's largest car maker at an oriental price tag interests you, right? What is the catch, you ask? As they say driving is believing, so read on.

Design

The Polo is a quintessential European hatchback - one that follows the lead from its elder sister, the Golf. The difference though is the fact that the new Polo is newer and none other than Walter DeSilva had a hand in designing it. The result is a car with crisp lines, bold elements and sharp detailing. Oh yes, the stance of the car is just perfect too. It may not follow the tall-boy architecture of the Wagon R or for that matter may lack the funkiness of the new-boy Ritz - but it does look contemporary and even a mite sporty. The Highline model features wheel-arch filling 15 inch alloys wheels which emphasizes the youthful/sporty nature of the Polo.

Comfort

Get inside and a bit of reality hits you - the plastic quality, if not questionable is very bland despite two textures and colour coding. Instrumentation is comprehensive and the white in black dials are easy to read. Overall ergonomics is praiseworthy for the way it makes drivers of different height and weight comfortable. And mind you, all models get a steering wheel that is fully adjustable. The rear leg room is nothing to write Wolfsburg about but if the front seats are not occupied by the likes of Ishant Sharma then the rear leg room can be acceptable. In short, you do know that VW had to build this interior to a price - expect buyers to pump in money on faux-leather and an entertainment system in an effort to complete the package for the base models while the top-end model get decent upholstery and an audio package.

C25996E0C2F46EF7F0C094CD8714.jpg

Performance

As of now the Polo will be available only with a 1.2 litre petrol engine but a diesel with similar capacity is set to following May 2010. I drove both the cars and was impressed by the driveability of the diesel engine despite the low displacement. The three-cylinder diesel develops 75 bhp at 4200 rpm and 18 kgm of torque at 2000 rpm. Even in bumper to bumper traffic, the car was tractable without the baulking associated with small diesel power plants. Given an open stretch of the road, the diesel managed a decent 140 kph with the engine spinning away lazily at about 3500 rpm. Most over taking requirements need a quick downshift and the slick, short-shift gear box help matters. If I have to crib it is about the engine noise that is too harsh at idle speeds and irritating at cruise speeds - something 18 kpl plus mileage (highways) force you to live with.
The 1.2 petrol on the other hand is way more refined and develops its 75 horses - like the diesel version. With peak torque of 11 Kgm coming in at 3750 rpm - it needs to be given the boot to get better reaction for your inputs - in other words keep the revs high and be on the boil for best results. Once you do that the Polo will sprint energetically ( you have to wait for a full road-test for acceleration figures). Expect the petrol variant to return 14 kpl in city/suburban driving conditions.

CA99F4CCD6EE1D76C791AC610A97C.jpg

Safety

The VW Polo is a new car even for Europe and all the safety features that are built into the monocoque of the car are as contemporary as it gets. But if you want ABS and driver and passenger side airbags then be ready to shell out Rs 5.72 and Rs 6.70 for petrol and diesel models respectively - pricey indeed but still more affordable than the Hyundai i20 and the Honda Jazz.

36C44818C4E064D4FD925086719372.jpg

Conclusion

The VW Polo marches into contention as a car that you cannot ignore if you are in the market for a premium hatchback. Apart from mouth-watering looks and exceptional build quality the way the car handles Indian terrain is also important - in this aspect the Polo is better than anything that Japan and Korea has to offer. The way it goes over undulating terrain and potholes is simply short of amazing. Add to that safe (read neutral) handling and decent ground clearance (168 mm) and you do have a tidy 'Indian' package indeed. How well the tiny three-cylinder engines will fare on varying Indian fuel quality is something one needs to wait to find out though. And now the million dollar question - will the VW Polo force the competition, especially Skoda, to reduce the price of their B-segment contenders? Let the games begin.

The Phoonk 2 scare challenge

Director Ram Gopal Varma seems to have a lot of faith in Phoonk 2, to the extent that's he's ready to hand out a cash prize of Rs 5 lakhs to anyone brave enough to watch his latest.

phoonk_200x23feb10.jpg

The contest claims to award the winner if he/she dares to watch the movie all alone in a cinema hall. Phoonk makers claim the last man who tried watching the first movie didn't even last 30 minutes.

The challenge, however, ran into scandal when many claimed the first wasn't scary at all, with some even alleging the scare contest was rigged.

But the team behind Phoonk 2 refuses to back down, and have taken the second version of the challenge to a whole new level.

"For Phoonk 2, we are adopting a very scientific method. The contestant will be fitted with an ECG machine while Phoonk 2 plays. The machine will monitor his heartbeat and pulse rate and this will be shown live on a screen outside the theatre to both the media and all concerned," revealed a press release.

Sachin Tendulkar immortal at 200

Even before he took guard at Gwalior, Sachin Tendulkar's place in the pantheon of cricketing gods was assured. He had already amassed both the highest number of runs and the maximum tons in Tests and one-dayers alike.

If devout worshippers had any reason to quibble, it was that there was no one record-shattering innings - Brian Lara has the highest Test score of 400 and Saeed Anwar and the little-known Charles Coventry shared the ODI record of 194.

Just 147 balls later, Tendulkar set the record straight in emphatic fashion. A staggering 2,961 matches and almost 39 years after the first ODI was played - and remember, many ODIs in the early years featured innings of 60 overs each, which gave batsmen more scoring opportunities - the Little Legend finally became the first cricketer to score 200 in a one-dayer, propelled by a record 25 fours in one knock.

The landmark 200 came in the final over of the innings, though Sachin crossed the previous record of 194 in the 46th over; in the interim, several lustily-hit fours and sixes by M S Dhoni were accompanied by groans from millions of spectators desperate to see Sachin on strike.

The big moment, though, finally arrived, crowning what is fast turning into one of Sachin's most productive periods with the bat. The last 12 months have seen him score 10 international hundreds: six in Tests - including four centuries in his last four Tests - and four in ODIs.

Three of those 4 ODI tons - Wednesday's 200, the unforgettable 175 against Australia last November and the brilliant 163 in New Zealand last March - are among his four highest ODI scores. Only his previous highest score of 186, against the Kiwis, falls outside this golden patch.

Some years ago, as Sachin struggled with injury and a dip in form, some commentators had the temerity to suggest that Ricky Ponting would eventually overhaul his records.

Over the past 12 months, though, Sachin has once again opened up a yawning gap between himself and all his contemporaries, and ensured that if at all any comparisons have to be made, they should be with another Australian - Don Bradman, who was famously reminded of himself when watching Sachin bat.

True, no one comes close to the Don's amazing average of 99.94, or his phenomenal 29 centuries from just 52 Tests. But the fact that Sachin is breaking records barely two months shy of his 37th birthday testifies both to remarkable longevity and an insatiable appetite.

Indeed, there are no speed limits on Sachin Tendulkar's road to excellence. After two decades of basking in the glory of his sporting pre-eminence on the world stage, India is now privileged to witness the second coming of the most complete and prolific batsman of this age. Even the back-breaking expectations of a billion unrealistic fans, it seems, are a pittance compared to the soaring aspirations of the man himself.

Over the last year, Sachin has taken his skills to a whole new level of consistency. The body, close to breakdown in the mid-2000s, has been chiselled to accessorize this new-found garb of perfection. Back in 1998, he had scored 12 international tons, 9 in ODIs and 3 in Tests. This purple patch has turned back the clock.

In the last 12 months, he has been the only player to score six hundreds in 10 Tests, at an average of 78.3. In 20 ODIs, a format in which his records are set in stone, he has notched up 1158 runs at 72.37, with 4 hundreds.

In Gwalior, Tendulkar strutted on his stage like a man possessed, ran between the wickets like a 20-year-old and reaffirmed his relevance in modern cricket's rapidly-changing dynamics.

When it finally came to pass, the unbeaten double ton almost seemed a scary inevitability. There were no cramps, no nerves, just steely intent to go on with a ruthlessly dominating display. Where have all the years gone?

Commentator Ravi Shastri repeatedly referred to him as a run machine, but that's only a half-Sach. Tendulkar isn't a mundane machine. Instead, he scripts his achievements with soul. This is a man for whom excellence is a habit, who is so devoted to his craft, so enthusiastic still, that with experience he has mastered the art of seamlessly binding talent, discipline and perspicacity, all without compromising on style, for maximum gain in a team cause. The end result is machine-like consistency.

Treasure this new, improved Tendulkar. He is, by far, still India's most valuable player, and will remain so till he decides to call it quits. But that's for later: after Gwalior, and given the form he is in, it's time to ask what's next. Maybe a 100 international hundreds, given that 93 are already in the bag?

  • Highest run-getter in ODIs, with 17,598 runs from 442 matches. Jayasuriya (13,428) and Ponting (12,731) follow
  • Most centuries in ODIs (46), followed by Ricky Ponting (29) and Sanath Jayasuriya (28)
  • Since Feb 24, 2009 has scored 1,158 runs in 20 ODIs, with 4 tons, averaging 72.37. In the preceding 12 months, had scored 352 runs from 9 ODIs at an average of 44
  • His double century is the first in 39 years of ODIs, including 60-overs-a-side matches
  • Highest scorer in Tests, with 13,447 runs from 166 matches. Next best Lara (retired with 11,953) and Ponting (playing with 11,859)
  • Most Test centuries (47), well ahead of Ponting (39) and Kallis (34) among active players, and retd Lara and Gavaskar (34 each)

How Sachin almost missed the record

Imagine missing out on a world record! Batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar had almost missed out on becoming the first player in the history of one day internationals to score a double century.

Let us rewind to figure out what happened in the penultimate and the last over of the Indian innings.

Sachin Tendulkar was unbeaten on 199 and MS Dhoni, the captain, at the other end unbeaten on 36. India were 368 for three.

South African fast bowler Dale Steyn came into bowl the 49th over. Dhoni was on strike.

The first ball yielded no run but the second one was hoisted over mid wicket for a towering six. The Indian captain could not connect his bat with the next ball.

However, the one after that touched the fine-leg boundary ropes. The next one was despatched by Dhoni for another six.

Fingers crossed. Will Dhoni hit a boundary? No was the answer as the ball was drilled down the ground to long off for a single.

People glued to their television sets were praying. The crowd on the ground was hoping to witness history. Come on Sachin!

Sachin Tendulkar unbeaten on 199 and MS Dhoni, the captain, at the other end unbeaten on 53. India were 385 for three.

The last over in the Indian innings was to be bowled by Langeveldt. Dhoni was on strike.

First ball. It was full length delivery and a bit wide but Dhoni is equal to the task and hits over the long off boundary for a towering six. The crowd reaction was a bit strange. Till then, almost every shot played by the Indian batsmen was cheered.

But this one met with a subdued reaction.

Five more balls to go. By then, every God may have been remembered in India. Sachin was still batting on 199.

Second ball. Dhoni plays wide of deep midwicket but Hashim Amla was equal to it. He fielded it and restricted the pair for a single. Never before you would have witnessed a crowd cheering for a rival team player for fielding and giving away only a run.

This finally brought Tendulkar on strike.

Then came the moment. Langeveldt came into bowl to Tendulkar. The ball was steered behind point. That was it. A single was taken. The crowd erupted. So did his teammates in the dressing room.

History was made.

This delay was possibly because Dhoni wanted to add as many runs as possible to his team kitty and also cross the total of 400.

But, nothing could deter one of the greatest batsman on Earth to add another feather to his cap. And, what a record it is!
